TMO - In the News

The Metropolitan Organization (TMO) and Fort Bend Interfaith are working together on a multi-issue agenda which comes from hundreds of individual and small group conversation which occur among the leaders of member institutions. TMO leaders are working on:

Improving Public Education

In 2001, TMO leaders worked to fund the $ 14 Million Investment Capital Fund at the Texas Legislature which provides $50,000 grants for staff development, parent training and student enrichment. I March 2002, eighteen HISD schools won ICF grants totaling $900,00 and a total of 40 schools in the Metro Houston area were awarded grants totaling $2.0 Million from the fund. Over $4.0 Million has come to Houston area schools from this grant in the last 3 years.

After School Enrichment

For 5 years, TMO has worked to create, expand and improve high quality after school enrichment programs for low income children. Today the City of Houston has invested $2.9 Million in 100 schools which serve over 12,000 students daily. TMO is working to improve the quality of the programs.

Access to Health Care

In 2001, TMO leaders gathered the signatures of over 120 Bishops, pastors, rabbis, and other religious leaders to oppose an Attorney General's opinion that would deny preventive & primary health care to immigrant families. Leaders met with the Texas Governor, Attorney General, Harris County Commissioners Court and the Hospital District to assure that serves continue.

Creating a Human Development Center

TMO leaders are working to create a model "human development center" where low income and immigrant workers can find work, learn English & job skills and learn about their legal rights as workers.

Parent Leadership Academies

Over 250 parents have participated in 4 to 6 week leadership academics where they learn the skills they need to become actively engaged in the education of their children. Parents learn to develop and teach the sessions.

San Jacinto Rail

TMO leaders have led efforts to assure there is a fair and full Environmental Impact study of a proposed new rail that will impact the Southeast region of Metro Houston.

Community Safety

TMO leaders are working to assure that the City & County enforce existing codes on abandoned building, weeded lots and dangerous bars.
