InfrastructureHighway projects, bridges and work zones

TxDOT's August 2026 phasing graphic puts the 14 projects of the I-45 North Houston Highway Improvement Project at about $9.5 billion, with construction running into 2038.

This section tracks the projects that will reshape Houston’s road network over the next decade, and the work zones drivers pass through in the meantime.

The largest is the North Houston Highway Improvement Project on I-45. The estimated contract costs on TxDOT’s August 2026 phasing graphic add up to about $9.47 billion across 14 projects (Texas Mobility Outlook’s calculation), with the first drainage work begun in 2024.1 Over the Houston Ship Channel, Harris County’s replacement for the Beltway 8 bridge is under construction, the Houston Chronicle reported in September 2026, and TxDOT carries a long-range record for replacing the I-610 crossing.2,3

Costs and dates shift, and agencies do not always agree with themselves. The project tracker shows each figure with its source and date, including where TxDOT’s own pages differ.
