Road SafetyIntersections, pedestrians and traffic deaths in Houston

Harris County recorded 503 traffic deaths and 2,630 serious injuries in 2025. In the City of Houston, pedestrians were 36% of traffic deaths in 2022.

This section covers who dies and is hurt on Houston streets and highways, where those crashes concentrate, and what the records say about why they happen.

Severe crashes cluster on a small part of the road network. The City of Houston and Harris County found that about 6% of streets accounted for about 60% of deaths and serious injuries in 2014 to 2018, a measure that leaves out freeways and toll roads.1,2 Across H-GAC’s eight-county region, 89% of crashes that killed or seriously injured someone in 2018 to 2024 happened on less than 14% of road miles.3

People outside vehicles bear a large share of the toll. Pedestrians were 36% of Houston’s traffic deaths in 2022, according to the City’s last Vision Zero annual report.4 For the full yearly counts, see Harris County crash statistics and City of Houston crash statistics.
