Crash data

Texas road deaths fell 9.4% in 2025, to the lowest count since 2019

3,769 people died on Texas roads in 2025, down from 4,159 in 2024. The death rate, 1.20 per 100 million miles driven, was the lowest in TxDOT records back to 2003. The state still has not had a day without a traffic death since Nov. 7, 2000.

Original analysis of public transportation data, with methods and source documents published alongside each note.

Research note 1

Is I-45 the deadliest highway in America? Tracing a statistic

A 2016 ranking by a personal-finance site put Interstate 45 second among U.S. highways, using fatal crashes per 100 miles of road from 2011 to 2015. Within four years, republished versions called it first and dropped the years. Here is the chain, the arithmetic and what official records can show.

Research note 2

Is Houston on track for zero traffic deaths by 2030? Ten years of data

Houston committed in 2019 to end traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. TxDOT's tables count 293 deaths inside the city in 2025, more than in any year from 2015 to 2018. Reaching zero on schedule would take a faster decline than any single year in the past decade.
