Houston's most dangerous highways: what the data can and cannot say
The published rankings of Houston's deadliest highways side by side, with their metrics and years, and what TxDOT's road-type data show instead.
The busiest count station in Harris County, on the Katy Freeway near Old Voss Road, averaged 330,394 vehicles a day in 2025. Seven of the 10 most congested road segments in Texas are in Houston.
Each corridor guide collects what public data say about one Houston freeway: where its traffic peaks, how much of that traffic is trucks, where it ranks for congestion, what crash data exist for it, and which construction projects are funded, under way or still on paper.
The volumes are among the largest in the state. TxDOT’s 2025 counts put the Katy Freeway near Old Voss Road at 330,394 vehicles a day and the 610 West Loop north of I-10 at 303,669.1 In the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s 2025 ranking, the West Loop between I-10 and I-69 was the most congested road segment in Texas for the third straight edition, and 36 Houston-area segments made the statewide top 100.2
Congestion and danger are different measures. TxDOT reports deaths by road class rather than by named freeway: in 2025, 134 people died on interstates in Harris County, up from 85 in 2015.3 Houston’s most dangerous highways sets out what that official data can show and how the published freeway rankings were calculated.
